1.4517 is the cast counterpart of the copper-bearing super duplex stainless steel 1.4507. The "GX" prefix denotes a cast grade. This datasheet presents the material within the European standard system.
With about 25% chromium, 6% nickel, 3% molybdenum, a copper addition (~3%) and nitrogen, 1.4517 provides, in the as-cast and solution-annealed form, the high strength and chloride pitting / crevice / stress-corrosion-cracking resistance of copper-bearing super duplex steel, plus good resistance to reducing acids from the copper. It is the cast equivalent of the wrought grade 1.4507. Mechanical-property minima are stated for the cast condition.
Typical applications include cast pumps, valves, impellers and fittings for seawater and chemical-process (acid) service, desalination plant and oil-and-gas components.

| Environment | Performance | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Chloride pitting | Outstanding | High Cr + Mo + N |
| Crevice corrosion | Outstanding | High-alloy duplex |
| Chloride SCC | Excellent | Duplex structure |
| Reducing acids (H₂SO₄, HCl) | Excellent | ~3% copper addition |
| Seawater | Excellent | Warm chlorinated seawater |
| Intergranular | Resistant | Low carbon |
A solid-solution cast alloy; it is not hardenable by heat treatment.
Solution Anneal approximately 1080-1120 °C, followed by rapid water quench to retain the balanced ferrite-austenite structure. Rapid cooling is critical owing to the high alloy content. Castings are normally supplied solution-annealed and quenched. Avoid prolonged exposure in the 300-1000 °C range (sigma-phase / 475 °C embrittlement).
Weldable for repair and fabrication using common fusion methods with a matching or over-alloyed super-duplex filler and controlled heat input.
| Process | Applicability | Filler / Consumable |
|---|---|---|
| GTAW / TIG | Good | Over-alloyed super-duplex filler |
| SMAW / stick | Good | Matching super-duplex electrode |
A post-weld solution anneal + quench is recommended for heavily welded castings to restore phase balance and corrosion resistance.
Machining Guidelines
| Parameter | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Machinability | Cast duplex; high strength; carbide tools, low speeds, rigid setup |
| Work hardening | Significant; positive feeds, avoid dwelling |
| Coolant | Ample flood coolant |
As a casting grade, primary shaping is by casting; machining is for finishing.
| Industry | Typical Components | Key Requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Chemical processing | Cast pumps, valves, impellers | Reducing-acid resistance (Cu) |
| Marine / seawater | Cast fittings, housings | Warm chloride resistance |
| Oil & gas | Cast valve and pump bodies | Sour-service resistance |
| Desalination | Cast pump components | Hot chloride resistance |
